On Our Radar: Unique Music Halls in Vienna

Vienna – a musician’s paradise and the birthplace of some of the world's finest virtuosos, offers a variety of captivating spaces where artists can refine their skills and immerse themselves in centuries of musical heritage. Here are three unique music halls, and how you can access them with Music Traveler, to enhance your experience in Vienna.

1. Read-hearse in Style: Austrian National Library

Thought a library was just for reading?

Not at the Austrian National Library where the sounds of musicians like Franz Schubert and Franz Joseph Haydn echo the halls as a backdrop to books. More than 12 million of them, plus collectibles, help define a landscape filled with baroque architecture.

Its State Hall is considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. The venue which was built from 1723 to 1726 under Emperor Charles VI, features a grand piano today which you can play to harken back in time.

A bonus of performing here? No need for a PA system (but beware of reading music or performing with candles).

2. Waltz Back in Time: House of Strauss

Waltz back to the nineteenth century when Johann Strauss II reigned as the "Waltz King" at the House of Strauss, a majestic music hall with many options to book your next performance or event.

Ballroom Hall

Ballroom Hall (or, Gartenpalais Zögernitz, in German) reigns as a Viennese architectural jewel, since its opening in 1837, with its picturesque garden and impressive ballroom.

As a central meeting point for Vienna's high society, it hosted many illustrious guests and events including celebrities like Carl Michael Ziehrer, Joseph Lanner, and even Johann Strauss Sr. and Jr. held unforgettable balls within its walls.

Its grand history gets even better once we consider the space’s renovation in 2022, which preserved its historical glory but integrated state-of-the-art technology to offer event hosts and visitors a unique experience.

 Strauss Piano Room

Want something more intimate? Check out Strauss’ piano room on the second floor.

During the nineteenth century, the Strauss family, along with many other musicians and composers such as Joseph Lanner and Carl Michael Ziehrer, performed here.

An additional modern bonus? Strauss’s piano room includes a refurbished grand piano once used by Johann Strauss himself.

3. More Than a Cup of Tea: Vienna State Opera

Feel like you’re having Early Grey with the Emperor at the Tea Salon within Vienna’s State Opera host, where Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria hosted special events.

The space breathes imperial Ringstrasse ( a period in the late nineteenth century marked by extensive urban development and architectural transformation) with yellow and gold silk bearing the emperor’s monogram. Plus, a painting by Carl Madjera (»Allegory of the Arts«) symbolizes the interplay of the arts involved in music.

Even better - the tearoom is still used for awards ceremonies, receptions, and gala dinners. And, you don’t need to be an opera singer to host an event.
